Abstract

298,608. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Moss, W. H.). Oct. 12, 1927, [Convention date]. Coating-processes; lacquers; fillers.-Metallic, glass, wood, or other surfaces are coted directly with one or more coats of a composition containing nitrocellulose and then with one or more coats of a composition containing cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose. Suitable organic derivatives are cellulose formate, propionate, or butyrate or other organic esters, or cellulose ethers such as methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose. It is preferred that after the nitrocellulose coating has just dried to the touch, one or more coats of a lacquer containing organic derivatives of cellulose as substantially the sole constituent of the lacquer base is applied. An example of a suitable cellulose, acetate lacquer comprises cellulose acetate, diethy phthalate, ethyl lactate, acetone, alcohol, and benzene. Instead of diethyl phthalate, another plasticiser such as triacetin, tricresyl, or triphenyl phosphate may be used, and ethyl lactate may be replaced by other high-boiling solvents such as diacetone alcohol, tetrachlorethane, benzyl alcohol, &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also coating the surface with a primer, such as one containing linseed oil, turpentine, resin, and pigment, before applying the nitrocellulose composition. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
