Abstract

293,435. Hercules Powder Co., (Assignees of Peters, G. H.). July 8, 1927, [Convention date]. Lacquers.-Nitrated carbohydrates (nitrocellulose, nitro-starch, &c.) freed from excess water, but not completely dehydrated are dissolved in solvents immiscible with water. The solution is subsequently dehydrated by centrifuging, addition of a hygroscopic substance, or other suitable means, or it may be simply applied as a coating whereupon the water evaporates simultaneously with the solvent. The solution may contain other ingredients such as water immiscible diluents, gums, oils pigments, &c. An example of a solution suitable as a lacquer contains 10¢ parts of nitrocotton with which are associated 4¢ parts of water, 30 parts of butyl acetate, 42¢ parts of toluol, 7¢ parts of ester gum, and 5 parts of tricresyl phosphate. Other suitable solvents are amyl acetate, butyl propionate; other diluents are mineral spirits, turpentine &c. Specification 293,434 is referred to.
