Abstract

A dope comprises a mixture of cellulose esters containing 10-75 per cent of a cellulose nitrate soluble in the solvents of a pigmented cellulose nitrate lacquer which is to be applied over the dope, a common solvent softener for the esters, and a common volatile solvent mixture for the esters and softeners. One or more, e.g. four, undercoats of this dope are applied on a stretched fabric, followed by one or more, e.g. two, coats of the lacquer. The dry undercoat system may be sanded. For the dope the cellulose esters may be acetate 3 parts and nitrate of high viscosity 2 parts; the common solvent softener may be tricresyl phosphate, \ba1/30\be to \ba1/2\be of the total weight of the esters, e.g. 3 per cent of the dope. Other softeners are triphenyl phosphate, dimethyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate and triacetin. In the example, the solvent mixture for the dope comprises ethyl lactate, diacetone alcohol, acetone, methyl alcohol, denatured alcohol, butyl alcohol, benzene and "methyl acetone," a commercial mixture of acetone, methyl acetate and methyl alcohol, b.p. 50-70 DEG C. The lacquer may comprise cellulose nitrate of low viscosity, dibutyl phthalate, linseed oil, chrome yellow, damar and a solvent mixture consisting of butyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate and toluene.
