Abstract

Surfaces particularly rough or porous surfaces such as those of wood, ceramic materials, metals &c. are first coated with a filler which comprises a substantial proportion of a non-drying oil or its fatty acid, and then with a cellulosic lacquer. The filler may be in paste or liquid form, and in addition to the non-drying oil, may contain a small quantity of plasticizers such as camphor, triacetin, diethyl or dibutyl phthalate or tartrate, monomethyl xylene sulphonamide, or ethyl toluene sulphonamide, with or without synthetic resins compatible with the cellulose derivative to be subsequently applied. The filler may also contain pigments or fillers such as lampblack, silica, china clay &c., and solvents or diluents such as gasoline, benzine, acetone, benzene, toluene, xylene, &c. Examples of fillers contain (1) cocoanut oil, china clay, silica, carbon black, gasoline; (2) cocoanut oil, diethyl phthalate, china clay, silica, carbon black and gasoline. The cellulose lacquer which is subsequently applied may contain cellulose esters such as cellulose nitrate, acetate, formate, propionate or butyrate or cellulose ethers such as methyl, ethyl or benzyl cellulose; synthetic resins such as those from phenol or diphenylol propane or toluene-sulphonamide and formaldehyde; solvents and plasticizers such as those used in the filler and medium and high boiling solvents such as dioxane, ethyl lactate, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, benzyl alcohol, diacetone alcohol &c. An example of a suitable lacquer comprises cellulose acetate, diphenylol propane-aldehyde resin, diethyl phthalate, acetone, benzene, alcohol and ethyl lactate, with or without pigments.ALSO:Surfaces, particularly rough or porous surfaces such as those of wood, ceramic materials, metals, &c., are first coated, as by rubbing or pressing, with a filler which comprises a substantial proportion of a non-drying oil or its fatty acid, and then with a cellulosic lacquer. Examples of fillers contain (1) coco-nut oil, china clay, silica, carbon black, gasolene, (2) coco-nut oil, diethyl phthalate, china clay, silica, carbon black and gasolene.
