Abstract
Lacquers, varnishes, coating, impregnating, and adhesive agents are prepared by incorporating technical mixtures of resin alcohols obtained by catalytic high-pressure hydrogenation of natural resins or resin-acid mixtures with an oil vehicle. The alcohol may be replaced by etherification, esterification or acetal derivatives. Suitable oils include linseed oil, turpentine oil, solvent naphtha, toluene, stand oils and thickened oils. Suitable natural resins include colophony, copal, dammar and amber. Solvents, diluents, pigments or siccatives may be included. In examples: (1) a picture varnish is prepared from dammar resin alcohol, turpentine and spirit; (2) a coating composition for rubber is prepared from dammar resin alcohol, methylcyclohexanyl adipate, toluene and spirit; (3) a lacquer is prepared from a linseed oil--wood oil stand oil, congo copal alcohol, solvent naphtha, zinc oxide and a cobalt fatty - acid salt; (4) a furniture lacquer is prepared from a linseed oil--wood oil thick oil, dammar resin alcohol phthalate, solvent naphtha and a cobalt drier; (6) a lacquer is prepared from the linseed oil fatty - acid ester of dammar resin alcohol or manila copal alcohol, solvent naphtha and a cobalt drier. Specifications 430,578 and 472,968 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers in general to the use of alcoholic reduction products of natural resins or derivatives thereof in lacquers, varnishes, coating, impregnating and adhesive agents. In examples: (4) an emulsion suitable for impregnating felt hats is prepared from neutralized sulphonated hydrogenated abietic alcohol and water; (7) a hydrogenated diabietyl ether is used as an adhesive for safety glass; (8) a solution of hydrogenated abietic alcohol is used for cementing optical glasses or setting physiological preparations; (10) a lacquer is prepared containing an ester of hydrogenated abietic alcohol, wood - oil fatty acid, solvent naphtha and a cobalt drier. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
