Cements and adhesives comprise lower fatty acid esters of cellulose such as cellulose triacetate or butyrate, acetone -soluble, cellulose acetate &c. and resinous condensation products of aliphatic dibasic acids with polyhydric alcohols or their hydroxy-alkyl ethers with the same or another aliphatic polyhydric alcohol. The resins may be obtained from succinic, maleic, adipic, oxalic or diglycollic acids and glycols, sorbitol. penta-erythritol &c. The compositions may also comprise soluble or insoluble colouring materials; fillers such as lithopone, ground slate, graphite. kieselguhr &c.: solvents; nitrocellulose in less amount than that of the carboxylates; softeners; natural or artificial resins such as colophony, condensation products of cyclic ketones, of urea and formaldehyde and of aromatic dibasic acids such as phthalic acid, and polyhydric alcohols in a quantity not more than that of the essential resinous constituent. Solvents specified include lower glycol monoalkyl ethers and their lower fatty acid esters, such as acetates or formates, cyclic ketones such as cyclohexanone, diacetone alcohol, methyl acetate, lower alcohols, lower aliphatic ketones such as acetone, diethyl ketone &c., dioxane or its homologues, ethyl, butyl, amyl or cyclohexyl acetates, liquid hydrocarbons, especially those of the benzene series, methylene chloride or mixtures of these materials. Specifictaion 304,814, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also resins from organic dibasic acids and polyhydric alcohols or the hydroxy-alkyl ethers of certain of such alcohols as the resinous ingredient.
