Cement and adhesives comprise nitro-cellulose and soluble resinous condensation products of aromatic dibasic acids with polyhydric alcohols containing 4 to 6 hydroxyl groups per molecule. The resins may be obtained from phthalic or halogenated phthalic acids and sorbitol or pentaerythritol, or their hydroxy-alkyl ethers, such as erythritol mono-or tetra-hydroxy-ethyl ether. The compositions may also comprise soluble or insoluble colouring materials; fillers such as lithopone, ground slate, graphite, kieselguhr etc.; solvents; cellulose esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids in proportion not exceeding that of nitrocellulose; softeners; natural or artificial resins such as condensation products of cyclic ketones, of urea and formaldehyde, and of aromatic dibasic acids and polyhydric alcohols containing less than 4 hydroxyl groups in less quantity than the essential resinous constituent. Solvents specified include lower glycol monoalkyl ethers and their lower fatty acid esters, such as acetates or formates, cyclic ketones such as cyclohexanone, diacetone alcohol, methyl acetate, lower alcohols, lower alipahtic ketones such as acetone, diethyl ketone &c., dioxane or its homologues, ethyl, butyl, amyl or cyclohexyl acetates, liquid hydrocarbons, especially those of the benzene series, methylene chloride or mixtures of these materials. Specifications 317,770, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. and 322,539, [Class 95, Paints &c.], are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also compositions comprising nitrocellulose and resins from dibasic organic acids and polyhydric alcohols.
