Adhesives.-Coating, adhesive, and like compositions comprise nitro-cellulose and soluble resinous condensation products of aromatic dibasic acids with polyhydric alcohols containing from four to six hydroxyl groups incompletely esterified by organic monobasic acids of natural origin and non-drying character, with or without the addition of solvents, softeners, other resins, fillers, or colouring materials. The term polyhydric alcohols also includes hydroxy-alkyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols. The resinous condensation products can be prepared for example from phthalic acid, halogenated phthalic acid or mixtures thereof and sorbitol or penta-erythritol incompletely esterified with ricinoleic, abietic or lauric acids. The solvents referred to are lower glycol-mono-alkyl ethers and their esters such as acetates or formates, ketones such as acetone diethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, dioxane and its homologues, diacetone alcohol, methyl acetate and the like, or mixtures of the above, to which may be added lower alcohols. The solvents may be diluted with esters such as ethyl, butyl, amyl or cyclohexyl acetate, or hydrocarbons, especially those of the benzene series. The ester diluents may also be used as solvents. Suitable additional resins are the condensation products of cyclic ketones, urea and formaldehyde or the like, organic dibasic acids and polyhydric alcohols, or natural resins. The fillers referred to are lithopone, ground slate, graphite, kieselguhr and the like. Specifications 316,914, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and 322,466 are referred to.
