Adhesives.-Coating, adhesive, and like compositions comprise nitro cellulose and soluble resinous condensation products of aliphatic dibasic acids with polyhydric alcohols incompletely esterified by high molecular aliphatic acids of non-drying character, with or without the further addition of solvents, diluents, softeners, plasticizers, resins, fillers or colouring matters. The resinous condensation products may be prepared from succinic, maleic, adipic, salicoylacetic, di-glycollic or oxalic acids or mixtures thereof condensed with glycerol, glycols, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, and the like, or mixtures thereof incompletely esterified with acids such as ricinoleic, abietic, or lauric acids. The term polyhydric alcohol includes hydroxy-alkyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols. Solvents include lower glycol monoalkyl ethers and their lower fatty acid esters such as acetates or formates, ketones such as acetone, diethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, dioxane or its homologues diacetone alcohol, methyl acetate, and lower alcohols or mixtures of the above which may be diluted with ethyl, butyl, amyl or cyclohexyl acetate, liquid hydrocarbons particularly those of the benzene series, or mixtures of these. The ester diluents may also be used as solvents. Other resins such as the condensation products of cyclic ketones, urea and formaldehyde, or aromatic dibasic acids such as phthalic acid and polyhydric alcohols, natural resins such as colophony may also be added. The fillers referred to are lithopone, ground slate, graphite and kieselguhr. In examples, (1) nitrocellulose is mixed with a resinous condensation product of succinic and abietic acids with glycerol and either Lithol Fast Scarlet RN, Indanthrene Blue GSL, lamp black or iron oxide, the solvent being a mixture of diamyl phthalate butyl acetate, butanol, ethyl acetate, toluene and commercial ethyl alcohol; (2) nitrocellulose and the resin as in (1) are mixed with tricresyl and triphenyl phosphates, with or without adipic cyclo-hexyl ester, the solvent being a mixture of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, cyclobexyl acetate, butanol acetone, toluene and commercial ethyl alcohol, and to which may be added Lithol Fast Scarlet RN.
