Abstract
A cellulose ester or ether, e.g. cellulose nitrate or acetate is mixed with a resinous composition prepared as described in Specification 370,440, [Group IV], from alkyd resin ingredients and drying or semidrying oils or both. These resinous compositions contain no free oil and form homogeneous blends with cellulose esters in all proportions; cellulose lacquers prepared therewith yield clear, transparent, tough films. In examples, the resin is prepared from phthalic anhydride and glycerine with or without ethylene glycol, and with linseed oil, cottonseed oil, or linseed and china wood oils, or all three oils, and in some examples with rosin, copal, or Dammar gum in addition. A solution of nitrocellulose in alcohol, ethyl acetate, and toluene is blended with the resin using as thinner a solvent mixture consisting of ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, amyl acetate, toluene, and xylene; or the resin may be dissolved in acetone and mixed with a cellulose acetate solution. Specifications 316,914, 327,096, [both in Class 95, Paints &c.], 350,463, and 356,141 also are referred to.ALSO:Resinous compositions prepared as described in Specification 370,440 from alkyd resin ingredients and drying or semidrying oils or both, and containing no free oil form homogeneous blends with cellulose esters or ethers in all proportions; cellulose lacquers prepared therewith yield clear, transparent, tough films.
