Abstract

Plastic compositions containing amorphous cellulose.-Nitrocellulose solutions or compositions are prepared by incorporating water wet pigments and water wet nitrocellulose, which contains about 5-60 per cent of water, with a solvent having a boiling point above about 120‹ C. and substantially volatile in air, that is a solvent which will dry off substantially in air from lacquers and enamels at normal temperatures. The wet pigment may be mixed directly with wet nitrocellulose or with a lacquer or the like made from wet nitrocellulose and from which the water has not been removed. Suitable solvents comprise butyl acetate, ethyl lactate and the mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol. When the water content of the composition is more than 6 per cent a proportion of solvent of still higher boiling point may be added, for example about 10 per cent of methyl cyclohexanone reckoned on the total bulk. Pigments which may be employed comprise not only the mineral earths and inorganic pigments, but also organic dyestuffs insoluble or substantially insoluble in water. The pigment may be incorporated in the form of a water wet paste with the water wet nitrocellulose on metal rolls in the presence of a plasticizer or linseed oil or other softening agent as described in Specification 309,964, but in the present process the selected solvent is also present and no attempt is made substantially to remove the water. In examples, suitable compositions comprise water wet nitrocellulose, water wet prussian blue, ester gum, tricresyl phosphate, butyl alcohol ethyl acetate toluol and butyl acetate or the mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol. In place of ester gum, any suitable natural or synthetic resin may be employed and in place of tricresyl phosphate any suitable plasticizer, such as dibutyl phthalate.
