Abstract

524,121. Printing-processes; coating surfaces. INTERCHEMICAL CORPORATION. Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2283. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1938. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Groups III and IV] Set-off, preventing.-A wet film of film forming composition such as printing ink on paper, metal, cellulose and other surfaces, is rapidly set by incorporating into the wet film sufficient of a film-forming solid which is soluble therein to dry the film. Preferably the incorporation is effected by impregnating the wet film with a solution of the film-forming solid in a volatile solvent miscible with the film solvent. Thus, a slow drying linseed oil printing ink film may be rapidly set by spraying or over-printing with a 5 per cent. solution of high viscosity chlorinated rubber in toluol, or with solutions of rubber derivative resins, ester gum or other resins. A film ofprinting ink which normally dries by evaporation, such as a mixture of carbon black and a varnish consisting of rosin modified phenol aldehyde resin and petroleum, may be set by applying thereto a 2 per cent. solution of high viscosity ethyl cellulose in 50 per cent. toluol and 50 per cent. denatured alcohol. A nitrocellulose ink consisting of 4.1 parts of Hansa yellow toner, 19.2 parts of lemon cadmium yellow, 27.4 parts of titanium dioxide, 1.4 parts of glycol sebacate and 47.9 parts of nitrocellulose solution consisting of 10 per cent. of denatured alcohol, 23.3 per cent. of second nitrocellulose and 66.7 per cent. of butyl carbitol acetate may be set by spraying it with a 3 per cent. solution of 1,000 second nitrocellulose. A normally non- drying ink consisting of 80 parts of castor oil and 20 parts of carbon black may be set by spraying with a 2 per cent. solution of high viscosity ethyl cellulose in a mixture of alcohol and toluol.
