Coating-compositions comprise a "solid-gelled non-drying vegetable oil" dispersed in a liquid medium. A "solid-gelled non-drying vegetable oil" is a non-drying vegetable oil which has been polymerized to such a high degree that it will not flow; it is substantially insoluble in the usual solvents and in order to get a clear homogeneous dispersion in a liquid medium, the product is first worked on the ordinary roller mill until it becomes a yellow opaque mass and the latter is then dispersed in the liquid medium by means of an ordinary mixer, ball mill &c. Gums may be added for varnish compositions, cellulose derivatives for lacquer or plastic compositions, and pigments or other additions may be incorporated. In an example, solid-gelled castor oil is milled to a yellow opaque mass, and nitro-cotton alone or in alcohol then added and milling continued; the mixture which may also contain pigments is transferred to an ordinary mixer where suitable solvents, plasticisers, resins &c. are incorporated. Two compositions comprising the solid-gelled castor oil, nitrocellulose (or ethylcellulose), ethyl alcohol, toluol, and ethyl acetate are given, and to these, plasticisers such as tricresylphosphate, dibutylphthalate, or oils such as castor, rape, cottonseed, perilla, linseed and chinawood oils or mixtures of these ("Blendoyl") may be added. Solid-gelled rape, coco-nut, cottonseed oils may replace solid-gelled castor oil, and other esters or ethers of cellulose such as cellulose laurate and nitrolaurate may find application in the compositions. The compositions give a tack-free coating particularly for coating leather.ALSO:Coating-compositions comprise a "solid-gelled non-drying vegetable oil" dispersed in a liquid medium.
