Abstract

Compositions adapted to be dissolved in suitable solvents and applied as lacquers, or cast to form moisture-proof, transparent, non-tacky and non-greasy coatings, films, sheets, wrappings, and the like comprise a cellulose derivative, a solid wax and a non-volatile wax solvent consisting of a blown oil in an amount of about 0,5 to 5 per cent by weight. Surfaces coated with such compositions may also be autogenously heat-sealed together at relatively low temperatures. Cellulose derivatives which may be employed as the lacquer base, include nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, benzyl cellulose, and the like. Animal waxes such as beeswax, mineral waxes such as ozokerite, or vegetable waxes such as candelilla may be used, but paraffin wax of relatively high melting point is preferred. Blown oils, of animal or vegetable origin which are specified include blown or boiled rapeseed, neat's-foot, linseed, soya bean, and perilla oils. Plasticizers, for example, ethoxyethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, methoxyethyl phthalate, triphenyl phosphate, and methyl-, ethyl-, or butylbenzoyl benzoate may also be present, and as optional ingredients the compositions may also comprise gums and for resins, for example, gum dammar, ester gum, copal, chlorinated diphenyl, or a mixture of ester gum and gum dammar. Examples of suitable compositions are given, the proportions being generally within the limits 50--75 per cent of lacquer base, 25--45 per cent plasticizer, and 0,5--5 per cent wax, and 0,5--5 per cent blown oil. The compositions are especially adapted for coating non-fibrous sheets formed wholly or partly of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester, benzyl cellulose, or other cellulose ether, or of casein, gelatine, or a synthetic resin. Films or sheets of glycerinated regenerated cellulose one-thousandth of an inch in thickness coated with such compositions have especially good moisture-proof qualities. Specifications 283,109, [Class 140], and 412,687 are referred to.ALSO:Compositions adapted to be dissolved in suitable solvents and applied as lacquers, or cast to form moisture-proof, transparent, non-tacky and non-greasy coatings, films, sheets, wrappings, and the like comprise a cellulose derivative, a solid wax and a non-volatile wax, solvent consisting of a blown oil in an amount of about 0,5 to 5 per cent by weight.
