Abstract

An adhesive applicator includes a potentially adhesive composition and a profusion of minute pressure-rupturable capsules each containing at least a volatile solvent for activating the adhesive composition, the capsules and composition being dispersed in the applicator in such manner that on rubbing the applicator on a surface some of the capsules are ruptured releasing the solvent and causing the adhesive composition to be deposited upon the surface. The applicator preferably takes the form of a crayon comprising a matrix of rigid material in which the capsules and composition are dispersed, and may be wrapped with metal foil for convenience in handling. In one form of the invention the capsules contain the adhesive composition as well as the activating solvent for the composition. Formulae are given indicating suitable proportions of adhesive compounds, solvent containing capsules and other components which provide stiffness and lubricating properties to the crayon. Ingredients referred to include: phenol-modified coumarone-indene resin, coumarone-indene resin, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, alkyl-aryl phosphate, polyvinyl-isobutyl ether, aromatic-solvent-soluble light coloured wax, phenolic resin, amine acetate salt and a polychloroprene-based adhesive. Solvents referred to include toluene, benzene xylene and mixtures thereof. Alternative adhesive compositions which may be used include acrylate or methacrylate polymers, alkyd resins, cellulose ethers or esters, natural resins such as shellac or rosin, vinyl polymers, rubber or synthetic rubbers and their derivatives, vegetable gums and starches and protein glues.ALSO:An adhesive applicator includes a potentially adhesive composition and a profusion of minute pressure-rupturable capsules each containing at least a volatile solvent for activating the adhesive composition, the capsules and composition being dispersed in the applicator in such manner that on rubbing the applicator on a surface some of the capsules are ruptured releasing the solvent and causing the adhesive composition to be deposited upon the surface.
