Abstract

A liquid coating composition comprises a solution of a binder which is a water-insoluble and water-inactivatable flexible film-forming composition in a non-aqueous volatile organic solvent and dispersed therein finely-divided particles of a water-activatable adhesive which is insoluble in said solvent, the proportions of said adhesive and binder being such that the dry coating produced therefrom contains not more than 95% by weight of the adhesive and at least 5% by weight of the binder. Adhesives specified are water soluble glues, dextrin, carboxymethyl cellulose, gum karaya and polysaccharides. Binders specified are polyvinyl acetate, nitro-and ethyl-cellulose, cellulose acetate and acetate-butyrate, polymers and copolymers of methyl, ethyl, n-butyl or isobutyl methacrylate, natural and synthetic rubbers e.g. butyl rubber, butadiene-styrene, nitrile rubbers, polychloroprene, chlorinated rubbers, polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride, zein and polyamides. The binder may contain water-insoluble and water-inactivatable extenders e.g. rosin, rosin derivatives, coumerone resins, pigments, dyes, fillers, and liquid and solid plasticizers. Solvents specified are ketones e.g. acetone, alcohols, e.g. ethyl alcohol, esters e.g. ethyl acetate, and aromatic hydrocarbons e.g. toluene or mixtures thereof.
