Abstract
A substantially resin-free coating composition containing a derivative of cellulose, e.g. cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, mixed cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, is made tough, adherent and more resistant to the pick-up of dirt, by incorporating therein a halide of an aliphatic long-chain derivative of a heterocyclic nitrogen base in which the aliphatic radical is linked directly with the nitrogen atom. Compounds in which the aliphatic radical contains between 10 and 18 carbon atoms inclusive are preferred, e.g. cetyl pyridinium bromide, cetyl pyridinium iodide, lauryl pyridinium chloride, hexadecyl pyridinium bromide, octadecyl pyridinium bromide, dodecyl pyridinium chloride. Plasticizers and/or softeners may be incorporated in the composition preferably in the proportion of 2 to 4 parts to 10 parts of the cellulose derivative. The composition is particularly suitable as a coating for bowling pins. The pins are preferably coated with a primer containing, for example, polyvinyl butyral resin, cellulose nitrate, shellac, ethyl alcohol, butyl acetate, butyl alcohol and high solvency solvent naphtha, and subsequently given two coatings with compositions containing an anti-dirt collecting agent of the type described. The number of coats may be varied and other types of primer may be employed, but the top coating must include an anti-dirt collecting agent. The coating composition may contain clear vehicles, pigments and a very small amount of a resin. Examples are given of compositions comprising (1) cellulose nitrate, castor oil, dibutyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, high solvency petroleum naphtha, butyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, butyl alcohol, petroleum naphtha, cetyl pyridinium bromide, and (2) cellulose nitrate, castor oil, high solvency petroleum naphtha, butyl acetate, alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, butyl alcohol, petroleum naphtha, cetyl pyridinium bromide.
