Abstract
973,032. Root-crop harvesters. A. E. BROOKES. July 3, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 12523/61. Heading A1F. A root-crop harvester comprises a wheeled frame 1 carrying digging members 5, an upwardly and rearwardly inclined conveyer 6 with its lower end positioned to receive roots from the digging members, a second upwardly and rearwardly inclined conveyer 12 with its lower end adjacent to the upper end of the first conveyer, the inclination of the second conveyer being sufficiently steep to prevent roots from being conveyed upwardly thereby, so that they are tumbled until they can escape laterally on to a discharge elevator. The second conveyer carries away leaves and haulms for discharge rearwardly of the machine. Both conveyers are of endless-chain slatted construction, as is the discharge elevator (Fig. 2, not shown). A further endless chain 8 overlies the conveyer 6 and carries roots from the share on to it. A stationary chain 11 is hung above the upper portion of the conveyer 6. The inclination of the conveyer 12 is variable by a lever 14 and jockey-pulley 13. The discharge elevator extends transversely and may have tine-bars instead of slats. A topping device, comprising a feeler-wheel and stationary knife, operates upon the adjacent row to that being lifted. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the discharge elevator extends longitudinally, but upwardly and forwardly to deliver into a receptacle on the towing tractor, the conveyer 12 being wide enough to overlap both the first conveyer 6 and the elevator.
