Abstract

1470392 Conveying roots in harvesters RANSOMES SIMS & JEFFERIES Ltd 27 March 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 01943/74 Heading A1F A root crop harvesting machine comprises a series of successively co-operating endless conveyors 11, 13, 15, 17 arranged so that on deflection of the crop by, for example a member 51 from one conveyor to another the crop falls a minimum distance possible. The crop is lifted by a share 21 onto a digging conveyor 11 where it is moved rearwardly and upwardly until the deflecting member 51 deflects the crop onto a transverse conveyor 13 which extends from immediately below the upper run of the digging conveyor 11. A second deflecting member 65 deflects the crop onto a picking conveyor 15, which similarly to the transverse conveyor 13 extends from immediately below the upper run of the transverse conveyor 13. Guides 67 ensure that the crop and clods &c are confined to a central portion of the picking conveyor 15 so that operators on platforms 19 can separate crop from clods and stones and place the latter at the edges of the belt 15 where through chutes 79 they are discharged to the ground. The crop is transferred by a chute 77 onto a final conveyor 17 for loading into a suitable container. The deflecting member 51 comprises a bar 53 and a parallel plate 55 between which trash &c is guided to a pair of rollers 59 which discharge the trash. The depth of the share 21 can be varied by pivoting of the lower half of the digging conveyor 11. The conveyors 11, 13 17 are slotted but the picking conveyor 15 is continuous.
