Abstract
746,749. Harvesting potatoes. BOWKER M. E. Dec. 29, 1952 [Feb. 12, 1952; March 3, 1952], Nos. 3623/52 and 5458/52. Class 6 (3). A machine for gathering potatoes previously dislodged by a digger comprises a wheeled frame 3 supporting a scoop 9, to travel beneath the potatoes, followed by a conveyer 2 comprising endless chains 12 interconnected by tine-bars 13 the dependent tines of which pass between parallel rods forming the base of an inclined trough 10 to carry the crop up to further conveyers 22, 27 and thence to a transverse conveyer 32 operating in a substantially horizontal plane, this conveyer being provided with a levelling-adjustment (not shown) so that the machine may operate upon sloping ground. The conveyers 22, 27, 32 are of endless slatted type, the conveyer 32 delivering to a shoot 34 or to a grading device comprising reciprocating riddles. Dirt passes through the bars of the trough 10 and between the slats of the conveyers 22 and 27, the latter being upwardly inclined and driven at a higher speed. Potatoes, delivered to the conveyer 32, tend to roll towards its rearward edge whence they pass into the shoot 34 whilst stones do not roll and are discharged laterally. The conveyers are driven from a land-wheel 4 by chains 17, 28 and gearing 33. The trough 10 is raisable on the frame by a lever 20, and may be pivoted about its leading edge by levelling screws (not shown).
