Abstract

976,171. Harvesting flower-heads. D. LORIN. July 4, 1963, No. 26597/63. Heading A1F. A tractor-mounted pyrethrum picker comprises a plurality of transversely-disposed combs 3 of a length equal to the width of at least one row of flowers, the combs being adapted to engage the stalks below the flower-heads and to be moved continuously upwardly as the vehicle advances. As shown in Fig. 1 the combs comprise rows of tines projecting from a drum 1 driven by a belt 4 from a power-pulley 5 on the tractor 2. The tines are of squaresection except at the tips which are circular in section and are spaced at about the diameter of a flower-stalk. A platform 7, terminating forwardly in a fixed comb or brush 8 interdigitating with the moving combs, receives the pulled crop, or, alternatively, a suction duct 10 sucks the crop into a bin 11. In Fig. 4, the combs 3 are carried by endless chains constrained to move over the surface of a segmental body 13 of which the chordal surface extends vertically at the front. A crop-divider 9 separates the row being picked from other rows.
