972,136. Ratchet mechanism. STERLING INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. Dec. 7, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 32250/61. Heading F2Q. A ratchet wheel 1 is driven by a pawl comprising a resilient blade 3 which is rigidly connected to a bracket 4 pivotally mounted on a spindle 5 and carrying a roller 7 which is adapted to be engaged by a cam 8 in order to flex the blade 3 into the dotted position 32, and subsequently to allow the blade 3 to straighten and thereby drive the ratchet wheel 1 forward one step. The bracket 4 also carries a weight 6 which, in co-operation with a pivoted member 15, causes the blade 3 to bow in the opposite direction at the end of the driving stroke and thereby act as a damper to prevent the ratchet wheel 1 over-running. Back-running is prevented by an adjustable flexible blade 21. The pivoted member 15 may be replaced by a stoppin 34.
