Abstract

971,103. Folding mobile tower cranes. R. B. CADILLON. March 21, 1962 [March 27, 1961], No. 10842/62. Heading B8B. The telescopic mast 7, 8, Fig. 1, of a towable crane is pivoted to a raised part 10 of a base 1 so that when the mast is retracted and lowered into a horizontal position the two-part jib 14, 15 can be accommodated beneath the mast, Fig. 6, with the crab and operating ropes still in position. To lower the crane into towing position the crab 30, Fig. 1, is moved to the outer end of the jib and the hook 31 is raised. A motor/reduction gear unit 46 which moves the crab and is slidable along guides 17 is disconnected by detaching a chain 48 and turnbuckle 49 from the foot of the mast. After disengaging pawls 40 the part 9 of the mast is winched down by ropes 35, 36, which co-operate with a reeving mast 38, until the jib is folded against the mast. The lower end of a tie-rod 26 is now detached from point 27 and bolts holding the jib sections together at 17 are removed after which lowering is continued until the member 9 is fully retracted. The mast is locked in this position and a tie-rod 42 is detached from the reeving mast 38 so that the latter can be raised to position 38<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, where it is held by a guy 44. The jib section 15 is now connected to the mast by a lug, a stay 11 is detached from the mast and lowering is completed. After connecting a stay 55 between the mast and carriage and locking the reeving gear 36, the end 25, Fig. 1, of jib tie-rod 23 is disconnected and jib section 14 is bolted to section 15. The end 22 of tie-rod 21 is then detached and the struts folded as shown in Fig. 6. A tow-bar with a retractable wheel 54 is attached to the jib tip and finally a pair of road wheels are attached to the front axle of the carriage. A switch 45 cuts out the hoisting motor when the crane is overloaded.
