Abstract

970,742. Mobile jib cranes. THEW SHOVEL CO. April 6, 1962 [April 14, 1961], No. 13437/62. Heading B8B. A gantry 60, Fig. 1, for luffing the jib 17 of a mobile crane comprises a frame 61 supporting a hinge pin 44 and pivoted to the crane structure at 12 which may be raised and lowered by a telescoping frame member 62 pivoted to the crane structure at 79. To raise the gantry 60 from the travelling position shown in dotted lines the jib is lowered on to a support or the ground and a derricking cable 10 is slacked off. Locking pins 97, 98, Fig. 3, are now withdrawn, against a spring 93, from upper holes 104, which in the retracted position of inner members 72 are aligned with holes in members 73, 74. These pins are moved by a cable release 91 having an operating lever 110, Fig. 1, in the driver's cab. Winding in the cable 10 now pivots the frame 61 anticlockwise about the pin 12 and extends the telescopic frame 62. The locking pins will automatically engage lower holes 103 if the lever 110 is moved, as soon as the frame 62 begins to extend, from an over-centre position in which the pins are held withdrawn. This procedure is reversed to lower the gantry. Outriggers 5, Fig. 1, may be extended when the crane is working.
