In a fabric having at least two threads 2, 3, drawn to opposite faces to form needle loops each of which is opposite the space between two consecutive needle loops of the same course on the other face, the thread 3 is knitted in all needle loops drawn to face B and connects the two faces by being formed, at same wales, into bights 4 which lie around needle loops 1 of thread 2 and being knitted, at other wales, together with the thread 2, to form double thread loops 5. A plating thread 7 may be incorporated in face B and may lie over thread 3, as in wales b, or under it, as in wales a. The thread 2 may be replaced by two pattern threads 8, 9, forming needle loops 8a, 9a respectively and each bridging needle loops of the other, as at 8b, 9b. Stripes running in the direction of the wales may be interrupted by courses, to provide a checked fabric. The fabric may be produced on a cylinder and dial machine in which the dial or cylinder contains needles with butts of two different lengths.
