Abstract

970,161. Cam mechanisms. THOMPSON RAMO WOOLDRIDGE Inc. Dec. 7, 1960, No. 42136/60. Heading F2K. [Also in Division F1] In an overhead valve operating mechanism for an I.C. engine (see Division F1), the rocker arms for the inlet and exhaust valves are both associated with a single cam 32 on an axially adjustable cam-shaft 31. The axial movement of the cam-shaft 31 is controlled by a centrifugal governor 54 in which balls 61, 62 move outwardly along grooves 64, 63, as the engine speed increases, and force a plate 58 and the cam-shaft 31 to the right against the action of a spring 52. The cam 32 has an axially changing profile which may be of such form as to provide an alteration in the valve timing, the valve lift or both upon the axial movement of the cam-shaft 31. The axial movement of the cam-shaft can be controlled by a device responsive to load, or by a hand-operated mechanism, either directly or through a servo device. The valve clearances are adjustable automatically, or manually by means of a nut associated with each rocker arm.
