Abstract

970,095. Thermal regenerators combined with tubular heat exchangers. L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC. ANON. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES G. CLAUDE. Aug. 7, 1962 [Aug. 11, 1961], No. 30278/62. Heading F4K. In a combined thermal regenerator and tubular heat exchanger having a group of wound tubes permitting the passage of a fluid therethrough in heat exchange with fluids passed externally of said tubes and through a regenerative section, the regenerative section has a filling which is composed of thin metal strips which are assembled together in stacks and positioned between consecutive tube turns of the wound tubes, the metal strips being maintained in spaced relationship within the stacks by spacer means constituted by partly punched-out tabs formed in the metal strips. In the form shown an axial core 5 is surrounded by wound tubes 6, 7, each layer of tubes being wound in an opposite direction to the underlying one. Metal strips 8 comprising the regenerator filling are placed in position between the tube turns as stacks of arcuate form, Fig. 2, the individual strips within each stack being separated from each other by partly punchedout tabs which also serve as a suitable means for connecting the strips together by brazing, gluing &c. Individual stacks are separated from each other by springs 9 and a continuous strip 10 surrounds the individual stacks and secures them in position, the strip 10 itself being fixed at its ends to the subjacent stack and also nailed at intervals to the stacks underlying it. The completed regenerator-heat exchanger comprises a central zone 16 formed by the assembly of the wound tubes and regenerative filling detailed above. Gases passing in direct contact with the regenerative filling pass through pipes 17, 18 and a separate gas passing through the wound tubes enters through a pipe 19 into a distributer 21, flows through the tubes and leaves via a collector 22 and a pipe 20. The axial core is connected to an outer casing by beams 25.
