Class 64(1) A rotary regenerator comprises a cylindrical shell 10 joined to a central post 12 by partitions 11 to form sector shaped compartments, a housing 20 provided with end plates 21 connected to ducts 15 ... 18, radially spaced elements 14 of heat transfer material to provide flow passageways therebetwen, imperforate flow sheets 24 dividing each passageway into a pair of oppositely tapering sections 23, 25, and intermediate flow sheets 26 disposed parallel to the sheets 24 and spaced to provide a number of passageways from the ends of the rotor to axially spaced portions of the elements 14. Cold air and hot gases entering the regenerator through ducts 17 and 15, respectively, are turned by the sheets 24 to flow in a radial directoin through the elements 14 before being again turned by the sheets 24 to leave the regenerator in an axial direction through the ducts 16 and 18. The flow sheets 26 may be imperforate corrugated sheets or have a finned surface while to facilitate assembly they may be spot or tack welded into prefabricated bundles. They may be provided only in those sections of each passageway adjacent to the hot-gas inlet and their ends may extend beyond the elements 14 and be fanned out to smooth the fluid flow.
