Abstract

836,247. Tubular heat exchangers. VISER, J. M. June 21, 1957. No. 19536/57. Class 64(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A heat exchanger comprises at least one tube within which is arranged a plurality of twisted strips disposed around a core member. The tube may be circumferentially corrugated and the twisted strips may be wound helically around a hollow core plugged at both ends (Fig. 1, not shown). Fig. 6 shows one form in which in a heat exchanger tube 23, a plurality of twisted strips 24, 25 are arranged around a solid core 24. In a further form shown in Fig. 3 twisted strips 16 in a heat exchanger tube are disposed around a core 13 itself comprising a tube carrying one of the heat exchanging fluids and containing twisted strips 14, 15 disposed in the manner shown. The other heat exchanging fluid flows through the annular space between tubes 12 and 13. Adjacent strips may be twisted in opposite directions. The strips may be welded at their ends to the core and, if liquids which tend to deposit solid matter are used in the heat exchange, the core and twisted strips may be rotatable as a unit to keep the tube walls clean. The invention may be incorporated in U-tubes through which oil is passed for heating by steam flowing over the tubes (Fig. 4, not shown).
