A face mask has a speech diaphragm incorporated in the diaphragm which controls the demand valve. In one form the latter diaphragm is shaped as an annulus 9 having a rigid ring 11 attached around its central aperture and across which a thin, speech-transmitting diaphragm 12, of doped silk, is stretched. The stem 20 of a tilt valve 17 bears against the ring 11 and thus, when the diaphragm 9 is drawn inwards, on inhalation, the valve 17 is opened to admit respiratory gas. The valve may also be opened manually, in an emergency, by rotating a knob 24 which turns a screw 23 and causes a dished, perforated plate 26 to press inwards on the ring 11. In another embodiment described, the speech diaphragm is carried on a ring mounted loosely in an annular housing adjacent to the aperture in the diaphragm 9 and thus additionally functions as the exhalation valve.
