Abstract

839,937. Respiratory masks. PATE, W. G. May 7, 1958 [March 18, 1958], No. 14570/58. Class 81 12). A respiratory face-mask has a pressure-plate 15 on which adjustment means 17 is mounted and suspension means 12 having a flexible portion engaging the adjustment means. A mask 11 having an oxygen inlet 18 is suspended from a helmet 10 by a flexible strap 12. A pressure-plate 15 of aluminium alloy, nylon or fibre-glass which may be perforated, fits over the mask and around the gas inlet. The strap passes through guides 16 on the pressure-plate and through slots 29 in the adjustment means 17 mounted on the pressure-plate 15. Loops 22 on the mask pass through holes 23 in the pressureplate and over tabs 21 to secure the pressureplate and the mask together. A microphone housing 25 projects through or is covered by the pressure-plate. Inside the adjustment means 17, the strap passes through a slot 30 in a nylon spool 31 having at its lower end a bore 38. Fig. 5 (not shown). A worm-gear 35 is secured on the lower part of the spool by the head 43 of a T-bar which engages the spool slot 30 and the worm gear hub 36. The rod 42 of the T-bar passes through the spool bore and is attached to a cap 45 engaging a push-button 55 which may be depressed against a spring 44 to disengage the T-bar head from the worm-gear hub, thus releasing the spool to be rotated by a helical spring 46 made of phosphor-bronze or beryllium copper, so that the strap is wound on the spool to press the mask against the wearer's face. The helical spring is energized before using the mask by rotating knobs 62, 63 which rotate the spool through a worm 57 meshing with the wormgear 35. When the mask is in position, further adjustment is effected by rotating the spool by the knobs. To release the mask from the face the button 55 is pressed and the mask pulled away, the helical spring being re-energized as the strap leaves the spool. The gears may be made of cadmium steel.
