[Class 135] [Also in Group VI] In a pressure breathing oxygen regulator having inlet and exhaust valves, a respirationresponsive diaphragm is connected to both valves so as to close the exhaust valve before opening the inlet valve, and vice versa. In Fig. 1, the mask is connected to outlet 9, and on inhalation, the diaphragm 27, moving to the right, acts on lever 25 to open ball valve 11 controlling the oxygen inflow. A screwed bolt 22 provides for adjustment of the point of opening and adjustability of the spring pressure excited on the ball is provided by a threaded bushing 17. Exhaust valve 30 in the inhaling position of the diaphragm is held closed by spring 35, being opened by the action of the lever 25 on bolt 31 when the diaphragm moves to the left on exhalation. Bolt 31 is adjusted to give a "lost motion of about .01-.015 inch. The expiratory valve may be rendered inoperative by plug 40. The diaphragmadjusting means comprises an internallythreaded rotatable knob 44 engaging a spider 46 prevented from rotation by, and sliding on, guide pins 60, 51 to compress a spring 43 bearing on the diaphragm 27. Latch means consists of a flat spring 53 adapted to press a ball 52a into a series of holes in the knob. A dial 56 calibrated in accordance with the pressure built up in the apparatus by spring 53 is placed to conform to the adjustment of the individual regulator, and secured by screw 57. In Fig. 6, the manually-controlled adjustable regulator is replaced by an aneroid enclosed in an apertured cover 42 and comprising external and internal bellows 61, 62 evacuated through tube 66. An adjustment screw 71 is provided whereby the spring 65 will commence to apply pressure to the diaphragm at 37,000- 38,000 ft.
