Abstract
1,208,775. Respiratory appliances. H. G. EAST & CO. Ltd. 14 Nov., 1967 [14 March, 1967], No. 11857/67. Heading A5T. [Also in Division F2] A valve for artificial respiration apparatus operable in response to pressure differentials between the patients lungs, a gas inlet and an exhaust, to alternately induce inhalation and permit exhalation comprises a valve body 10 having a gas inlet 11, an outlet 12 to the patient and an exhaust 15, a control valve 22 being movable within the body in response to the pressure differentials to alternately interconnect the outlet 12 to the patient with the inlet 11 and the exhaust 15 respectively, the valve having on its inlet side a first area for closing the inlet and a second area communicating by apertures 27 with the exhaust side and being biassed to close the inlet by a manually adjustable permanent magnet 29 or magnetic member mounted in the inlet and a permanent magnet 25 or magnetic member supported by the valve 22. The adjustable magnet 29 is secured in an apertured plug 31 slidable in the inlet on rotation of an external sleeve 33 connected to the plug by a screw 34 which passes through a helical slot 35 in the valve body. The valve 22 is tubular and has radial flanges 23' which engage an enlarged central bore portion of the valve body. An apertured plate 23 at one end of the valve bears against an internal flange 17 in the valve body to close the inlet, the apertures 27 permitting flow of gas from the inlet to the outlet when the inlet is opened after exhalation of the patient, the exhaust outlet then being closed by the rim (28) at the other end of the valve 22. When the inlet is closed following an induced inhalation exhaled gas passes to the exhaust 15 through an annular slot 20 and an annular space 19 in the wall of the valve body.
