Abstract

910,065. Respiratory appliances. GODEL, E. P. V. R. April 6, 1961, No. 12403/61. Class 81 (2). A valve assembly for anaesthesia or forced respiration has means for forcing gas into the patient's lungs and allowing free exhalation. The hollow body 1 has an inlet 7 connected to a bellows pump and an outlet duct 19 enclosing a bellows-like member 24 which is normally held against a central projecting plate 23 by a spring-loaded valve 28, which thus closes a central aperture in the bellows. On the pressure stroke of the pump, the member 24 is extended into contact with a seating 37 and thereafter the valve 28 is forced open to pass air to the mouthpiece 38 and so into the patient's lungs. On the subsequent suction stroke of the pump, the valve 28 is closed and the member 24 is contracted, so allowing air from the lungs to pass over the seating 37 and out to atmosphere through apertures 36. At the same time the pump draws in air through a non-return ball valve, set perpendicularly to the plane of the Figure. The apparatus also provides a union 3, fitted with a non-return valve 4, for the attachment of an oxygen or other gas supply, and with an adjustable pressure relief valve 11.
