Abstract

901,357. Respiratory apparatus. SIEBE, GORMAN & CO. Ltd. April 29, 1960, No. 15182/60. Class 81 (2). A mouth-to-mouth resuscitator comprises a tube, one end of which extends in an airtight manner through a portion of a face mask and is inserted in the rescuer's mouth and the other end of which has a passageway for connection with the victim's lungs, and means for permitting the rescuer's exhalations reaching the victim and preventing the victim's exnalations reaching the rescuer. A flexible tube 10 is connected to a tube 20 which passes through a demand regulator 21 and mask 22 of the rescuer's breathing apparatus. The other end of the flexible tube is connected with the victim by a face mask 31 or, alternatively, a mouthpiece (not shown) which has a cuff which is inflated by exhalations of the rescuer and deflated by his inhalations to permit the victim to exhale to atmosphere. When a face mask is provided for the victim, a valve 30 which permits the rescuer's exhalations to reach the victim but prevents the victim's exhalations reaching the rescuer is disposed between the flexible tube and the victim's mask. The valve 30 comprises two portions 32, 33 screwed together to secure a perforated plate 34 between them. The part 32 is secured to the flexible tube and has apertures 39 which are obturated when the rescuer's exhalations flow to the victim, by a cylindrical membrane 40 secured to an annular flange 37 on the plate 34. A rubber disc 38 covers holes 36 in the pate within the flange and is displaced to permit the rescuer's inhalations to reach the victim. When the victim exhales, the holes within the flange are covered by the disc and exhaled air passes through other holes 35 in the plate and displaces the cylindrical membrane to be vented to atmosphere through the apertures 39 in the valve part 32.
