Abstract
1,087,849. Respiratory apparatus. C. G. D. ENGSTROM. Jan. 26, 1965 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 3433/65. Heading A5T. Respiratory apparatus supplied with gas under pressure includes at least one safety valve, the or one safety valve being responsive to excess pressure and having a delayed opening mechanism. Gas entering the apparatus through flowmeters 11 is rhythmically compressed by a compressor 10 and flows to an attachment 15 for connection to the patients' lungs through a non-return valve 13, a liquid trap 18 forming a safety valve being located in the supply conduit 12. A safety valve 20 with delayed release is located in the exhalation conduit 16 or the supply conduits 12, 14 and comprises a slide 30 slidable in a sleeve 31 attached to the conduit, a branch 33 of the conduit opening into the sleeve and being normally closed by the slide. The slide is connected by a rod 28 to a piston 21 movable against a spring 35 in a cylinder 21 by pressure in a conduit 24. Conduit 24 is connected with the conduit 16 through a non-return valve 27 and a restriction 25 in parallel. In the event of an overpressure in the conduit 16, the piston moves the slide until the branch conduit 33 registers with a vent passage 32 in the slide, the delay in opening of the valve being determined by the initial distance between the branch conduit outlet and the registering portion of the vent passage. In alternative constructions (Figures 3 and 5, not shown), the piston is replaced by a diaphragm (71) responsive to an overpressure in the conduit to move a shaft (72) towards 'the stem (96) of a safety valve (92). The shaft opens the safety valve after a time delay dependent on the degree of overpressure and the initial distance between the shaft and the safety valve stem. The shaft attached to the diaphragm may form a displaceable contact (162, Figure 6) which makes the circuit of a solenoid (155) to open the safety valve (153), the distance travelled by the shaft before making the circuit determining the time delay of the valve. Alternatively, the safety valve comprises a piston (178, Figure 7) which is moved against a spring (179) in a cylinder (170) directly by the overpressure in the conduit to uncover vent openings (180) in the cylinder.
