Abstract
888,546. Respiratory appliances. HOPE, W. Nov. 23, 1960 [Nov. 23, 1959], No. 39683/59. Class 81 (2). A valve assembly associated with an anaesthetic mask has an outlet valve closed by a spring, the tension of which can be adjusted from the exterior of the housing, and an inlet valve which is freely movable between its closed and open positions. The tubular housing 13 has a connection, not shown, for attachment to the mask, and a lateral extension 15 enclosing the outlet valve 21. This is held against its seating 19 by a spring 22, the outer end of which bears against a plug 25 screwed into the member 15 so that the tension of the spring may be adjusted by altering the setting of the knurled head 27. The inlet valve 35 is mounted on a stem 36 slidable in a guide 37, which is mounted in a push-in housing 40, the latter providing a seating 34. The provision of such a valve ensures that the patient can withdraw gas through the tube 30 even if this is under very low pressure. The tube 30 and closure cap 29 can be interchanged if it is desired to avoid the use of the inlet valve, and, furthermore, the cap 29 may be replaced by a fitting 31 for attachment to an endotracheal tube. Specification 483,502 is referred to.
