Abstract
968,480. Stereophonic loud-speaker systems. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. June 22, 1961 [July 15, 1960], No. 22690/61. Headings H4J, H4R and H4X. A stereophonic loud-speaker system comprises a cabinet having a front, a rear and two side walls, a sound conducting opening in each side wall, a diaphragm loud - speaker mounted in each side portion with its diaphragm angularly facing toward the adjacent opening in the associated side wall and sound directing waveguides mounted in the side portions of the cabinet and acoustically connecting the diaphragm of each loudspeaker with the adjacent opening in the side wall. The waveguides each consist of a plurality of vertical partitions positioned in spaced relation to each other. A rectangular cabinet 5 (Fig. 1) has side chambers 9, 10 in which are mounted loud-speakers 7, 8 each with its axis of radiation 16 (Fig. 4) at an acute angle to the adjacent side wall. The chambers 9, 10 are separated by partitions 11 and a central chamber 6 houses a stereophonic F.M. or A.M. radio receiver 45 and two amplifiers 48, 49. The loud-speakers 7, 8 are of the moving coil type and are mounted on baffle boards 37. The waveguides are defined by vertical and parallel partitions 27 to 33 which provide ducts which are less than one wavelength across at the highest useful frequency of transmission. The partitions may be curved or variously shaped and angled, provided the various path lengths from the plane of the baffle board to a forward listening point 0 are the same for all ducts. The virtual sound sources 22, 23 are outside the cabinet.
