Abstract

1,070,186. Loud-speakers. SONY CORPORATION. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 25, 1963], No. 43342/64. Headings H4J and H4X. A loud-speaker enclosure has front, side and rear walls and a mounting position for a loudspeaker on the front wall. A side wall has at least a portion thereof formed as a subdiaphragm having a mechanical resonance corresponding to a portion of the frequency spectrum for which emphasis is desired. An enclosure 1, Figs. 1, 2, has front and rear panels 2, 3 formed of relatively rigid polyvinyl chloride plates and its four side walls 4, 5, 6 etc., formed as sub-diaphragm panels of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene foam or propylene in the form of membranes. An air-tight casing is provided when the loudspeaker 9 is mounted on the panel 2. Each sub-diaphragm is damped by a coating of synthetic rubber adhesive. The front and rear panels 2, 3 are secured together by cross-bars 13 and a polyurethane elastic member (14), Fig. 5a (not shown), is centrally located between each sub-diaphragm and its adjacent cross-bar 13. Glass fibre (15) covers the rear panel 3. Sound waves produced by the sub-diaphragms have a velocity at right angles to the principal axis of the loud-speaker, see Fig. 1, and reinforce the response of the system. The sub-daphragms have resonance peaks of low sharpness, at approximately 500 c/s., and are utilized to give an overall system response which is relatively uniform to below 200c/s. when using an enclosure of 13 cm. x 13 cm. x 8 cm. The enclosure may be mounted in the corner of a room, but the best low frequency response is obtained by placing the rear of the enclosure against a first wall close to a corner so that one sub-diaphragm is spaced from but close to a wall adjacent the first wall. An alternative enclosure (Fig. 10, not shown) has relatively rigid side walls (26) which contain drone cones (22, 23, 24, 25) having a natural resonant frequency of about 500 c/s. In other arrangements (Figs. 11, 12, not shown) the front and rear walls are relatively rigid and the connecting wall (27) forms a sub-diaphragm which is circular or elliptical in cross-section.
