Abstract

319,408. Gramophone Co., Ltd., (Victor Talking Machine Co.). June 23, 1928. Loud-speakers. - An inertia-controlled diaphragm is provided on both sides with a resonance-chamber, one being in the form of a short horn and the other being constituted by the cabinet in which the diaphragm is mounted. The cross-sectional area of the resonance-chamber in planes perpendicular to the direction of vibration of the diaphragm, and the outlet areas, are at least as great as the projected area of the diaphragm. The two chambers are preferably resonant at different frequencies, the higher of the two resonances being more heavily damped than the lower. The conical diaphragm 1 of a moving-coil loud-speaker is resiliently mounted on an annulus 3 of rubber &c., the magnet system 5 being supported on a cross-bar 11 mounted in a cabinet 8. A horn-shaped baffle 6 extends from the periphery of the diaphragm to a larger aperture in the front panel 9 of the cabinet, while an aperture greater than the projected area of the diaphragm is formed in the back panel 10, and is covered with sound transmitting fabric. Alternatively vents for the rear resonance chamber are formed in the other walls, 7, of the cabinet. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the diaphragm faces the back of the cabinet and a folded two branched horn 13, 14 opens in a single mouth in the front panel 9 of the cabinet, which is provided with vents 12 for the second resonance chamber. Specification 288,276 is referred to.
