Abstract

967,455. Surgical masks. SOUTHALLS (BIRMINGHAM) Ltd. Dec. 8, 1960 [Oct. 18, 1960], No. 35717/60. Heading A5T. A surgical mask comprises a rectangular sheet 12 of heat sealable paper superimposed on a sheet 14 of more porous stronger paper which has triangular cut-away portions centrally on each side, the longer edges 18, 19 of the heat sealable sheet projecting beyond the corresponding edges of the other sheet, the two sheets being heat sealed together and folded about a line 17 midway between the top and bottom edges, the contacting portions of the heat sealable paper at the folded corners then being heat sealed together whilst the projecting longer edges are folded against the other sheet to enclose fastening means for the mask. An elastic cord is enclosed in the heat sealed folded longer edges, loops of the card projecting from the sheets for passing over the ears when the mask is opened out for use. The heat sealable paper is made from a mixture of thermoplastic and non- thermoplastic fibres, the thermoplastic fibres predominating on one surface. The heat sealable sheet may form either the outer or the inner surface of the mask or the other sheet may be disposed between outer and inner sheets of heat sealable paper.
