965,587. Holding devices. ELECTROMAGNETS Ltd. March 21, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No. 11120/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1P. The load contacting face of a lifting electromagnet has inserted in it a friction material e.g. " Ferodo " ((Registered Trade Mark), in order to prevent slipping when steel plates are lifted on edge. The friction material may be in the form of a number of annular rings which either lie flush with the lifting surface or protrude therefrom. In the latter case the rings are mounted on an electric packing so that when the magnet is energized the packing is compressed and the load contacts the magnet poles. In a modification the friction material is in the form of spring- loaded cylindrical blocks housed in pockets in the lifting face.
