Abstract

954,370. Magnetic holding devices. O. S. WALKER CO. Inc. July 18, 1960 [Feb. 12, 1960], No. 25054/60. Heading H1P. A magnetic lifting device comprises a housing with a work-supporting surface having mounted in the housing a permanent magnet or magnets and a movable flux-conducting member forming a part of the magnetic circuit so that when the said member is moved relative to the housing, the reluctance of the magnetic circuit is increased, resulting in work release. The housing 10 consists of a pair of magnetic rectangular side walls 12, non-magnetic end walls 14 and a magnetic top plate 16. The work supporting surface which may be flat or curved comprises pole faces 18, 19 and 24, being the lower surfaces of the side walls 12 and a flux conductive member 22 respectively, and non-magnetic members 20 separating the pole faces. Within the housing 10 are mounted permanent magnets 40, for example of ceramic material, moved through a lost motion connection comprising a pin 44, the ends of which engage in recesses 46 in the polepieces 42 by a flux conducting member 30. As member 30 is raised by a crank member 34 with wrench engageable portion 36, surfaces 26 and 28 first part, and then magnets 40 move up to flux shunting plate 16, weakening the flux and resulting in work release. Non-magnetic pins 48 on polepieces 41 carried by magnets 40 prevent their engagement with plate 16. In a modification the magnets 40, and the polepiece 41 and 42 are fixed relative to the side walls 12, the member 30 carrying the stop member 48 (Fig. 4, not shown). In modifications, spring 56 urges members 30, 22 apart and spring 58 prevents engagement of member 30 with plate 16; no lost motion mechanism is provided; the magnets are fixed directly to member 30 or side walls 12, the inner or outer polepieces being replaced by thin magnetic shields 54, Fig. 5 (Fig. 9, not shown). In another modification the side walls 12 have a central portion of non-magnetic material (Fig. 6, not shown). The area of contact between surfaces 26 and 28 may be increased (Figs. 7, 8, not shown). In a further embodiment, the outer walls 12, the magnets 40 and member 30 are cylindrical in shape, Fig. 10.
