Abstract
958,501. Electromagnets. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 30, 1960 [July 3, 1959], No. 22939/60. Heading H1P. A ferromagnetic body is held in either of two stable end positions by at least one, ferrite, permanent magnet, and is moved between them by electromagnetism provided by a current pulse. As shown, the body 1 comprises the permanent magnet and holds itself against either end of the soft iron cylinder 3, but is sent from one end to the other by repulsion when the appropriate coil 4 or 5 is pulsed. In one alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), the body is of soft iron and there is a permanent magnet at each end of the cylinder which is now of brass; a single coil extends between the ends and the pulse is applied for the first half of the travel only, the polarity being such that the body is repulsed from whichever is the nearer magnet. In a second alternative (Fig. 3, not shown), the body is again a permanent magnet which now traverses between the soft iron cores of two electromagnets connected in series whose polarities are such that the body is repulsed by one and attracted by the other. In this case the pulse length is immaterial but its sign must be appropriate for the direction of travel required.
