Abstract
946,162. Magnetic holding devices. THEW SHOVEL CO. Nov. 8, 1961, No. 40062/61. Heading H1P. A permanent magnet lifting device for use with cranes comprises a carrier having a contact plate at the bottom and a permanent magnet which is movable bodily towards or away from the contact plate between a position in which the magnetic field at the underside of the contact plate is effective to support a load of ferromagnetic material against the plate and a position in which the field at the plate is reduced to a value at which the load is released. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a carrier suspended from a chain 9 is provided with a non-magnetic base-plate 2 having a central recess within which a permanent magnet 10 is fitted, vertical holes in the magnet fitting around posts 4 projecting upwardly from the recess. In order to release material magnetically attached to the lower surface of the plate 2, the magnet is lifted away from the plate 2 by means of a cable 16 which when withdrawn acts through ring 17 and cable 15 to cause pivoted links 11 to rotate and so lift the magnet 10. The links 11 are so shaped, Fig. 2 (not shown), that the initial breaking force is greater than that subsequently applied. In a second arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the magnet is lifted hydraulically and in a third arrangement, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), it is lifted by a block and pulley system.
