An article of furniture comprises horizontal elements, e.g. shelves 2, removably attached to side parts, e.g. bracket-like members 1, wherein the side parts 1 are removably connected to vertical elements, e.g. rails 3 or columns 9, by a bayonet type catch 4, 5, the latter connection being such that the side part 1 can be separated from the vertical elements 3, 9 only when positioned out of its normal, operative position and is secured in its normal position by the horizontal elements 2. The bayonet connection comprises a pin 4 secured to the rear of the side part 1 and having at its end projections 6, the pin 4 selectively engaging the rail 3 through a hole 5 therein with the side part 1 horizontal and the side part 1 being then rotated to its normal, vertical position with the projections 6 engaged behind the rail 3. The pin 4 may engage a nut 7 mounted on a rotatable but vertically fixed bolt 8 to provide a fine vertical adjustment for the side part 1. The side parts 1 carry pins 12 having heads with peripheral recesses 13 which engage cut away portions 15 in spring steel plates or angle members 14 secured to the ends of a shelf 2 positioned between adjacent rails 3, thereby to prevent inadvertent release of the bayonet connection 4, 5. The cooperating surfaces of the cut-away portion 15 and the recess 13 may be chamfered to provide a clamping return. A screw 26 bearing on the head of the pin 12 to provide a fine vertical adjustment, and a releasable locking spring 27 engaging beneath the head of the pin 12, may be provided. The side parts 1 may constitute shelf ends or form the sides of cabinets having hinged or sliding doors 11, 10. The rails 3 may be secured to a wall or, alternatively, the article of furniture may be free standing and include vertical columns 9 which may be centrally located. Vertical partitions 25 may be provided between columns 9.
