A mechanical linkage, for the axial adjustment of a vertical roll of a rolling mill, includes adjustable locking means for the linkage and a fluid-operated mechanism for supporting the roll to permit easy adjustment of the locking means. Upstanding arms 15 of a chock 10, supporting the roll, are held between projections 28 and 30 of pivotally mounted levers on shafts 23 and 24. Rotation of shafts 23 and 24, caused by axial adjustment of a tie-rod mechanism 36 being transmitted to the shafts by further levers 34 and 35, effects axial adjustment of the roll. Before raising the roll by increasing the tie-rod length, a nut 54 rotated by a tommy bar, is moved to the right, and then a fluid pressure medium is introduced into a cylinder 45 to force a piston 44 to the left and raise the roll. The nut 53 is moved to the right against a ring 50, integral with the cylinder 45, and the pressure is released. Similarly, for lowering the roll, pressure medium is fed into the cylinder to support the roll and the nut 53 is moved to the left the required degree, the pressure then gradually being decreased and the nut 54 tightened. The piston and cylinder arrangement need not form part of the tie-rod 36.
