Abstract

Carbon that has been graphitized by heating to form a graphite is impregnated with a solution of a metal compound which is decomposed by heat to the oxide of the metal, said metal forming a carbide when heated in the presence of carbon, and subjected to a second heating step at 1400-1800 DEG C. The impregnation may be carried out under vacuum. In Example (1) graphite was impregnated with an aqueous solution containing aluminium acetate and hydrochloric acid, heated to eliminate the hydrochloric acid, and the aluminium acetate decomposed by heating to 600 DEG C. The graphite was then heated at 1600 DEG C. for 3 hours. Calcium acetate may also be used.
