A heat exchanger comprises a single tube in the form of an open-coiled helix or flat spiral sandwiched in a fluid-tight manner between separate walls to provide between the turns of the coil a clear helical or spiral duct, the tube and duct being used to conduct two fluids, e.g. cold sludge and hot water, in heat exchange with each other in counter or co-current flow. The helical coil A shown in Fig. 2 is enclosed by cylinders C, B connected at their ends by annular plates F so that a helical duct E is formed between the spaced turns of the coil. Alternatively the enclosing means may comprise helically wound strips connected to the coil along their lateral edges. The tubing may be of square or rectangular cross-section. A plurality of enclosed flat spiral tubes A<SP>1</SP> may be connected in series (Fig. 6). The heating water or other liquid may be pumped through the helical or spiral duct E or E<SP>1</SP> in a closed circuit, and it may also be drawn from a heatable body of liquid in which the enclosed coil is immersed.
