Abstract

962,339. Discharge apparatus. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. July 12, 1960, No. 24287/60. Heading H1X. A device for use in spectrum analysis of a solution by means of a spark discharge, comprises a stationary carbon or metal electrode 4 and a counter-electrode 7 mounted for rotation around the axis of the stationary electrode 4 at a constant radial spacing therefrom, means being provided for atomizing the solution under analysis directly into the spark discharge comprising a capillary nozzle 1 connected with a solution-containing reservoir 2 and disposed substantially in axial alignment with the stationary electrode 4. The counter-electrode 7 is mounted on an arm secured to a sleeve 8 rotatable by a motor or air turbine. A spark generator 6 is connected to the electrode 4, to the sleeve 8 through a sliding contact 10 and to the solution by a lead 3 through a glass tube having the capillary nozzle 1. The device can function vertically or horizontally, in the latter case the arrangement for the supply of liquid being modified to ensure that the liquid is fed through the nozzle 1 whilst maintaining the nozzle 1 and the electrode 4 substantially coaxial.
